Peeking Out From Between the Hanging Rugs

Taldykorgan, Kazakhstan 2001

The bright eyes and pearly white perfect teeth on this fresh young face shyly smiled back at me from under the shadow of heavy woven rugs. I found the children in Kazkahstan so refreshing, their Mongolian features strikingly distinct. While most Kazakhs may never venture beyond their borders, many consumer products are imported. This young man is wearing a t-shirt with a logo in English which was probably made in China and brought over the border in big red and blue checkered bags for wholesale distribution in the city markets.
